Cemetery of the Germans

AUTHOR:

The cemetery of the Germans, as it is called by the Veronese, is one of the two special cemeteries envisaged in the original project conceived by Giuseppe Barbieri and was intended for the soldiers of the Habsburg army and their families. Today the area is used for the Islamic burial camp.

Placed in the hemicycle of the north side of the Cimitero Barbieri, in the hemicycle on the opposite side the children who died prematurely were buried: this space was demolished in the Ten years to make room for the Cimitero Nuovo.

In the nineteenth century the German cemetery housed a large number of burials of which today only five monoliths have been erected for as many characters of the Habsburg Verona, including the greater sarcophagus, made for the military architect Franz von Scholl, and the cross dedicated to Francesca von Strassoldo Grafenberg, first wife of Field Marshal Radetzky.
