Carlo di Canossa monument

AUTHOR: Lorenzo Muttoni e Antonio Conconi

  • 1845
  • intercolumniation CLXXIII

At the behest of the Canossa noble commission, the monument has a distinctly neoclassical style and Lorenzo Muttoni was created for the sculptural part and by Antonio Conconi for the architectural part. Carlo di Canossa is portrayed of three quarters in a clipeus of Roman ancestry with the toga stopped on the shoulder by a pin. At the sides two winged cherubs hold the medallion: the left one has a butterfly in its hands and symbolizes the soul’s otherworldly life, the right one has an upturned torch and represents death.
